At the St. Croix Youth Sailing Association (STXYSA), we offer progressive sailing programs designed to help young sailors learn, grow, and thrive on the water. From first-time racers to advanced skiff sailors, every class emphasizes seamanship, safety, and fun — because strong sailors start with strong fundamentals.
Opti Program
Intermediate (Ages 8–12)
Confidence, fundamentals, & fun — the perfect first step
The Optimist (“Opti”) is the classic beginner boat for youth sailors. At STXYSA, our Opti program builds a solid foundation in sailing skills and racing techniques for developing sailors.
Students learn to rig, launch, steer, and race independently, gaining confidence and a love for the sport.
Focus Areas:
- Boat handling and sail trim
- Starting, tactics, and race strategy
- Sportsmanship and independence

420 Program
Intermediate (Ages 10–14)
Level up boat handling, tactics, and teamwork.
The Club 420 is a two-person boat that teaches coordination, communication, and strategy. Sailors work together to master new techniques like trapezing, spinnaker handling, and tactical racing.
Focus Areas:
- Teamwork and communication
- Boat balance and trim
- Regatta preparation and racing drills

29er Program
Advanced (Ages 12–18)
Fast is fun! Coach pre-approval required.
For sailors ready for speed & challenge, the 29er is a high-performance skiff that rewards skill and precision. Training focuses on technique, physical conditioning, and competition readiness.
Focus Areas:
- Advanced boat handling and skiff dynamics
- High-speed teamwork and decision-making
- National and international regatta preparation
Entry into the 29er program requires prior
experience and coach approval.
